Audrey Bunny by Angie Smith and illustrated by Breezy Brookshire (Review and Giveaway)

FlyBy Promotions was kind enough to provide me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. There are Amazon affiliate links within this text.

Audrey Bunny is a very special stuffed bunny rabbit that due to a unique mark on her chest believes she will never be selected or loved by a special child. A young girl named Caroline proves Audrey wrong by adopting the insecure, but sweet bunny as her very own. Caroline and Audrey enjoy a lot of fun days together, but Audrey is always haunted by her unique mark and spends large amounts of effort to keep the mark hidden from Audrey. On a life changing trip to school for show and tell, Audrey’s mark is exposed and Caroline reveals that it was that very mark that led her to take Audrey home.

As seen in the images below, reading Audrey Bunny was enjoyable for all of us. Itty Bitty didn’t even give Daddy time to get breakfast before requesting her first reading of the day. Although, she isn’t old enough to understand the entire message, she loves having the book read to her and loves the pictures of the children and the bunny!

The illustrations are beautiful with fantastic artistic interpretations of facial expressions conveying love, fear, anticipation, and joy. The personification of the rabbit, Audrey is portrayed beautifully in the pictures throughout the book. Two of our favorite illustrations are seen below.

This book shares a wonderful message with our children; that our unique differences, special circumstances, and physical characteristics were created by the hands of God and therefore we are all wonderfully made. The book is part of B&H Kids Parent Connection, which links the book’s message to Psalm 119 and utilizes related passages in the bible to create discussion questions for children and parents (see far right frame in above image). Audrey Bunny provides a fantastic platform by which to discuss individual differences and in helping children recognize they are beautiful and wonderful just as they are!

Audrey Bunny has quickly become a favorite in our house and is often sought out by my daughter, Itty Bitty as you can see in the above image. She loves having the story read to her and will often respond to the images of Carolina holding Audrey by patting her own stuffed animals and baby dolls. The only concern in our house is that there are a few parts of the story line that appear disjointed. The flow of the story seems interrupted at points almost as if a page is missing or an unfortunate edit left out an important line or phrase. At one point Caroline says, “Well, you silly thing! How did you manage that?” but it’s not clear to what action by Audrey Caroline is responding. Given that the message is so powerful and the story idea so beautiful, it is somewhat disappointing that at times the story itself can be somewhat difficult to follow. To be sure it wasn’t just me I had my husband and mother read the book with Itty Bitty as well and both expressed similar concerns.

Overall, as you can see in the image above my family, including Itty Bitty and her grandma, really enjoyed Audrey Bunny! I am very interested in pursuing additional books that are included in the B&H Kids Parent Connection. I sincerely thank the author and illustrator for the time and energy they put into this book and for allowing me to share it with my family. Audrey Bunny has been placed on the living room shelf for repeated reading and family discussion.
