NIV Ragamuffin Bible
Meditations for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, & Brokenhearted
with reflections by Brennan Manning
The premise behind the NIV Ragamuffin Bible is that many of us could use guidance recognizing the love and joy God expresses for us in scripture. The bible is filled with reflections written by Brennan Manning, an American author, priest, and public speaker. Recently deceased (April 2013), he is likely most famous for his published work and bestselling book, The Ragamuffin Gospel.
The reflections throughout the bible are enlightening to read and succeed in being uplifting; although, the reflections don’t always clearly coincide with the scripture on the page in which it is published. The commentary is useful as fodder for individual meditation, but does not lend itself to discussion or intensive study. Regrettably, aside from a brief introduction written by Manning at the very beginning, there is very little information in the book regarding the author of the many reflections throughout the book. In comparison to other bibles in this reviewer’s home, the Ragamuffin Bible is very durable with pages that are thicker than most. The bible is easy to read with type of average print. This bible would be an excellent gift for anyone feeling downtrodden or as a graduation gift for students preparing to start new ventures.
Do you believe that God not only loves you, but that he also likes you?
It’s just one of the soul-searching questions posed by bestselling author Brennan Manning who confesses he has been ‘John the beloved, Peter the coward, and Thomas the doubter all before the waitress brought the check.’
The NIV Ragamuffin Bible offers a collection of Manning’s raw, painfully honest, yet grace-filled devotions, meditations, and reflections of his journey limping back to—like the prodigal son—his overjoyed father. When you journey through this Bible, you will likewise find yourself returning to your Heavenly Father, basking in the knowledge that God not only loves you, he delights in you.
